US-based property and casualty insurance company Westfield has announced a new program to help prevent electrical fires in homes.

Westfield LogoThe new solution, Ting, uses advanced smart plug-in sensors to monitor a home's electrical network, detect electrical hazards, alert homeowners and guide them in timely repairs to avoid electrical fire risks.

Westfield has partnered with Whisker Labs to provide Ting sensors and three years of fire protection service at no cost to customers.

“Part of our mission is to provide peace of mind to our customers, and Ting does just that by providing homeowners with advance notice to help prevent home fires,” said Steve Butler, vice president of personal lines product management and underwriting at Westfield.

He added: “Westfield has a long history of providing insurance products and solutions to protect our customers and communities – dating back 176 years in fact – and this new technology is well aligned with our mission.”

Ting, a smart home technology, helps prevent electrical fires by providing advance warning to mitigate the risk of fire before catastrophic losses occur.

The system can also detect electrical faults in the power grid that could damage homes and spark wildfires in some areas prone to these types of natural disasters, and help predict problems that could lead to water damage in homes.

According to the announcement, 10,000 people will receive the fire danger sensors and service free of charge this year, and Westfield also plans to roll out the smart sensors and service to more than 20,000 additional homeowners over the next three years.
