When a busy working couple in their late 30s with two young children and a beloved poodle decide to move from the city to the suburbs in search of more light, space and real estate, they find themselves in a quaint river town. In one, we found a classic 1929 colonial home. It offers great possibilities for your growing family. The bones and layout of the spacious five-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom, 6,100-square-foot home were great, but the new owners wanted to infuse a brighter, more modern look into the interior. “They liked our eclectic modernist-pop aesthetic,” says Gala Magrinha, a Westchester resident and president and founder of New York's Gala Magrinha Design. “And we were confident that we could modernize the home with minimal work, just as they wanted.” The homeowners also appreciated Magrinha's approach to interior design, where design elements are used to promote health and well-being. I was also attracted to the unique holistic approach.
Respecting the original architectural details, many of the rooms were painted a muted off-white, providing a blank canvas for the designers. “We introduced pops of color with shades of green and terracotta, and personality with abstract art and meticulously selected objects,” she explains. The resulting elegant interior features durable, family- and dog-friendly furniture and materials that will keep it looking fresh for years to come.
Welcome to my home
The central hall space welcomes family and friends with traditionally styled hand-woven Sardinian wool rugs in warm reds, tans and grays. Reclaimed hand carved pine credenza in a modern eclectic style. Wallpaper with a bright light blue and cream grass cloth pattern.
Location settings
The “wow” part of this home is the dining room. With a prime focal point visible from the entrance, you can host everything from intimate dinner parties to fun holiday celebrations. To modernize the look of the ceiling moldings, the entire ceiling was painted a warm terracotta color called “Rust” by Benjamin Moore. Dove Wing from the same manufacturer is used for the walls. The centerpiece of the room is an oval oak table top on T-legs by Four Hands, complemented by armchairs upholstered in rusted velvet and black wooden armchairs with caned backrests by CB2. No chairs are combined. Above the table is a dark walnut tiered slat light fixture by Arteriors, again choosing a modern style to contrast with the more classic elements of this home. Area rugs in a viscose/cotton/wool blend also lend a more modern, organic feel.

A wall painted with Benjamin Moore's Cloud Cover and stone-white sheer curtains made from a blend of linen and cotton add light and airiness to the living room. Beneath the Bistro Globe chandelier by Studio for Visual Comfort Signature, a modern celadon velvet sectional with a storage ottoman and a modern-shaped solid wood block table form the focal point of the space. Other furniture includes a custom area rug in New Zealand wool in a neutral geometric pattern, a curved Hollywood Regency-style accent chair upholstered in amber velvet fabric, a credenza made from natural wood and a modern Includes an organic style wicker cabinet front. Streamlined all-white cabinetry, polished nickel pulls, stainless steel appliances, and a white marble subway tile backsplash bring the heart of this home into the 2020s and beyond. With stylish and durable marble on the counter and island top, this busy room can withstand everything from meal prep to snack time. A modern, organic chandelier made from plain wood by Artteriors sits in the center of the island and serves as a focal point. The island, painted in Benjamin Moore's charming Van Cortlandt blue, is surrounded by a comfortable Scandinavian blonde on his Ash stool by Four Hands.

Although it is part of the main kitchen, it is separated by a small peninsula so it feels like a separate room. The sunny breakfast area features a modern farmhouse-style mango wood table and benches. Designed as a multipurpose space with walls painted in Benjamin Moore pale oak, woven grass Roman shades, and seating banquettes covered in durable textured crosshatch fabric in a natural light taupe color. and can withstand frequent use by busy people. family. Sophistication outside the office
The home's original beautiful wall panels were left in place, but the wall above the fireplace was painted Boreal Forest by Benjamin Moore, modernizing the feel and adding a new splash of color. A modern shaped solid black nettle desk by Four Hands was chosen as a juxtaposition with the very classic wood paneling. Seating includes a Four Hands upholstered velvet desk chair with nettle wood arms and a steel base, and a modern armless lounge chair and ottoman in olive green velvet. A small pedestal table next to the latter is made of volcanic ash, stone, fiberglass and sand resin. Anthropologie's dog silhouette print sits atop a black four-handed credenza with a vertical leash and bluestone top.
Healing Sanctuary
Creating a sanctuary-like space, like the master bedroom shown here, is one of the tenets of a holistic interior design approach. Using light woods, soothing textures, and whimsical organic brushstroke mural wallpaper in cream and blush tones by Drop It Modern, we created a space where the homeowners can rest and relax. Modern, organic-style upholstered sled beds by Four Hands feature organic linen bedding in muted blush tones.
Sugar & Spice & Everything Nice
Redesigned as a focal point on the shelf, the interior of the fireplace is painted in a cheerful Light Salmon high-gloss finish by Benjamin Moore, and the hand-woven wool rug features a cream and gold constellation motif.
What is holistic design?
Designer Gala Magrinha says holistic design, which can be used in conjunction with traditional design, involves paying attention to how the environment affects the whole person. While traditional interior design is primarily concerned with aesthetics (how a space looks) and functionality (how a space functions), holistic design emphasizes how a space is designed to improve the way a person's mind, body, and overall It also has to do with how it affects your sense of well-being. In addition to aesthetics, we consider factors such as atmosphere, light, balance, energy, color, nature, materials, sustainability, and sociability. This project promotes airiness by decorating the living room windows with pure white curtains and opening every room possible to the outside view, while the dining room, kitchen and breakfast room have a strong presence. Light was encouraged by the use of chandeliers. area. We created a natural feel by using not only organic materials such as wood, linen, and cotton, but also accent colors of green and plants. In the dining room and living room, the use of bright colors on the walls encouraged sociability.
The owners looked to Magrinha for a traditional design, but were open to incorporating some of the overall design ethos, she says. “Their house was an old house, so I was intrigued by the idea of 'space cleansing,' using sage to remove any emotional debris left in the space.” This ancient Native American ritual was practiced on moving day. It is performed when the house is empty, to honor the home and create a clean slate, a happy and peaceful place for the new family. The new owners walked around the house clapping their hands and banging pots, then shook sage in different rooms to remove stagnant energy from inside the house. The creation of a sanctuary space, in this case the master bedroom, was another core principle of the overall design incorporated into the project.
