Adding DIY projects to the mix is a great way to breathe new life into store-bought decor and dress up your home on a budget. Learn how to make a stunning star mirror that looks expensive but costs less than $25 with these simple and easy steps from CountryLiving.com.
Things necessary:
•1 spool of jute twine ($5, amazon.com)
• 14-inch round mirror ($8, michaels.com)
• Painter's tape ($4, amazon.com)
• Nails ($7, amazon.com)
Step 1: Tracing and numbering
Use a pencil to draw the circumference of the mirror where you want to hang it on the wall and mark the center. Divide the circle into 16 equal parts and mark the point where each line intersects the circle. Mark each point with numbered painter's tape (numbers 1-16). Start at 1 at the top center and move clockwise in numerical order.
Step 2: Tape and nails
At point 1, measure a 16-inch vertical line outward using a ruler and mark the end point. Go to point 2 and measure the 12 inch line and mark the end point. Continue for each point of the circle, alternating between 16 and 12 inches. Mark the outside points with numbered painter's tape (numbers 17-32). Move clockwise in numerical order, with 17 in the top center. Drive nails into all points.
Step 3: Wrap the twine
Wrap the twine around the nail using the following guide. Tie a knot with the first nail, end with a knot, and cut the twine with the last nail. Start at nail 25, wrap around nails 11, 29, 15, 17, 3, 21, 7, and end at nail 25. Starting with nail 26, wrap the twine around nails 12, 30, 16, 18, 4, 22, and nails. 8, ending with 26. Starting with nail 27, wrap the string around nails 13, 31, 1, 19, 5, 23, and 9, ending at 27. Starting with nail 28, wrap the string around nails 14, 32, and 2. , ending with 20, 6, 24, 10, 28.
Step 4: Wrap the twine (again)
Next, wrap the twine around nails 9, 26, 10, 27, and 11, starting with nail number 25. Continue this pattern clockwise, alternating between inner and outer nails, until you return to nail number 25. Using the twine, wrap it around nails 10, 26, 11, and 27, skipping nail 9. Repeat the same pattern alternating until you return to nail 10. Finally, wrap the twine clockwise around each nail inside. The circle is completed with nail 9.
Step 5: Hang the mirror
Paste the two large picture hanging strips to the back of the mirror and stick the mirror to the wall according to the package instructions.
