Interior designer Kelly Wearstler is known for her sleek, modern designs. Her projects range from luxury commercial to residential, and she is known for her unique design approach that experiments with layered materials, a balance of old and new, and numerous architectural references.
This home office, which the designer shared on Instagram, perfectly embodies her iconic design style, and intrigued by its non-conformist style, we take a closer look at the design of this space and how it achieves the perfect balance of form and function that's essential when creating these hard-working rooms.
As an opportunity to learn modern, minimalist decorating ideas, we were immediately inspired by this home office design. The space experiments with combining different wood species in contrasting tones throughout the room, from the striking desk to the herringbone wooden flooring. The generous use of wood gives the room a natural, organic feel and contrasts with the concrete walls, which serve as an architectural feature.
Not only is this office space visually stunning, it's also a very practical design: Featuring built-in floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, the space offers the perfect solution for storing office essentials out of sight, promoting a calm environment and creating an inspiring space to work.
To prevent the room from feeling sterile, but rather lived-in and comfortable, the styling choice of displaying a light-coloured coffee table book infuses colour into the home office, as do other decorative pieces such as a marble desk tray and a red glass vase.
“In the world of interior design trends, we're seeing a rise in interest in the home office as working from home becomes more integrated into everyday life,” explains Jennifer Ebert, deputy editor of Homes & Gardens.
“A home office allows you to be creative, experiment with different design styles and create an inspiring environment to work in. It's the ideal room to try out bold design ideas that you might shy away from in the heart of the home, such as the kitchen or living room.”
