You don't have to be a frequent host, but you know that a guest bedroom is a gift that keeps on giving. Is there a convenient place for a loved one to settle down that is slightly higher than an air mattress? Sounds like a win to me. So when my husband and I moved into her three-bedroom apartment two years ago, we wanted to create a room for her friends and family to stay.
catch? A three-bedroom apartment may sound big, and it's definitely more spacious than an old studio on the Upper West Side, but space is still at a premium. Since my husband and I primarily work from home, it was important for us each to have our own office. (We had been working together at the dining table in our previous apartment during the height of the pandemic, so it was a welcome upgrade.) We wanted to have space for proper guests, and the occasional visitor. It felt like a pain to allocate an entire room just for visitors. Misuse of site area.
My husband suggested adding a trundle bed to make one of the offices multifunctional. Trundle beds typically consist of a twin bed frame with an extra bed on casters that nest underneath the entire unit when not in use. To be honest, I didn't like the idea at first. Sure, I may write about interior design for a living (and love small space hacks as much as the next person), but trundle beds feel a little…well, childish. I did. The last time I saw a trundle bed was at an elementary school sleepover.
However, if getting a trundle bed means each of you can have your own office and guest area, you can at least give it a try. In the end, I ordered the Andover Mills Astra Upholstered Daybed with Trundle from Wayfair. Since then, he's become one of the smartest items in our home (and it's currently on sale!).
Decorated with an upholstered frame with tufted details, this trundle is very easy to assemble and looks like any other daybed when not in use. It's located in my office, so I often use it as a cozy place to work on early morning deadlines or administrative tasks. However, when you have guests over, pull out the subbed from underneath, place a sheet on each mattress, and voila! Our visitors always rave about our quality sleep, and we don't have to compromise on space or style to be great hosts.
But perhaps my favorite thing about this dual-function daybed is that the trundle is not attached to the rest of the bed frame. Instead of guests climbing over each other just to sleep, the second mattress can be pulled out far enough to create a small passageway between the two beds. This was especially helpful when entertaining one of my best friends and my husband's graduate school friends. Since they didn't know each other beforehand, I moved the removable trundle into the living room so each friend could have their own space. For a piece of furniture that costs twice (sometimes triple), it's certainly worth the $431 investment, but it's currently 30% off, discounted to $300 in the gray color. Please note in particular.
The only thing I don't like about trundle beds is that they are not compatible with thicker mattresses. Andover Mills said it would accommodate mattresses up to 10 inches when I purchased it in 2021, but they now recommend mattresses no thicker than 9 inches, which may not necessarily be the most comfortable. yeah. However, the trundle isn't attached to the rest of the bed frame, which was easily fixed by adding Allswell's 10-inch hybrid mattress and bed riser. Is it a small DIY project that will make your guests comfortable and best secure your destiny as a host? It's a win-win.
