Best Duvet Cover FAQs

What is the best duvet cover to stay cool?

Preeti Gopinath, professor of textiles, says both cotton and linen duvet covers are cool, but if you tend to get overheated while sleeping, linen is likely the best choice. “Linen stays cool against the skin. It has a special ability to maintain great temperatures.”

How about weaving?

When shopping for duvet covers, you may come across the terms “percale” and “satin,” which refer to the different weaves of the fabric. Again, the choice comes down to personal preference. Classic percale cotton bedding has a crisp feel, while satin fabric has a smooth, silky feel.

“[Cotton] Percale is the simplest plain weave structure,” says Gopinath. “When you look at it under a microscope, you see a checkerboard pattern. It's basically as simple as all the threads alternating up and down.

“In contrast, satin and satin fabrics are woven with long 'floating' fabrics or threads, meaning the threads are not tied down.More than 3 or 4 threads [threads] It's smoother because it's before it's locked. ”

What is the best thread count for a duvet cover?

Thread count is traditionally a metric used to describe bedding quality, but as Gopinath explains, very high thread counts aren't always reliable. You don't need to look beyond 300-350 thread count for cotton percale or 400-600 thread count for satin bed sheets.

“What we’re really counting is the ‘fabric count,’ or the total number of warp (warp) and weft threads within a square inch of fabric,” she says. “If you have a very thin thread, you pack more into a square inch, but if you have a thicker thread, you pack less. Based on that logic, more thread per inch This means that by default a thinner thread is used, which is the default assumption regarding quality, that the thinner the thread, the higher the quality.

“But it's also a marketing tool used by cheap manufacturers. When people start saying it's 1000 thread count and cotton yarn, I get suspicious. Cotton has a minimum thickness. She added that the reason Egyptian cotton is so popular is because it has a longer “staple length” (i.e. the length of the fibers) than other cottons, making it smoother to the touch.

How do you wash duvet covers?

The general rule is to dehydrate gently at a lower temperature, such as 30 or 40 degrees, than a regular wash. Remove bedding from the washing machine quickly to avoid wrinkles and let it air dry or use the gentle setting on your dryer. However, there is no one rule that fits all situations. Polyester, cotton, linen, silk, and bamboo all require different techniques, and you may not want to tumble dry at all. It is best to check the label and fabric care information online for your individual case.
