We live in a hyper-reality, a fast-paced, ever-changing world. Blink and you'll miss it. This has made us more conscious and sensitive about the environment we live in and the need to take care of it. We are what surrounds us. If there is truth in these words, we must build homes that support healthy and wise living for ourselves and future generations.

The main concerns for smart homes have always revolved around energy efficiency and sustainability. The automation market is experiencing rapid growth in environmentally friendly products that are easy to use. Design solutions such as energy-saving lighting, automated home appliances, and security solutions are a direction towards a more sustainable life. But no amount of intelligence or automation can replace the willingness to follow a sustainable lifestyle and the keen awareness that comes with it. A smart home is not defined purely by automation and technological gadgets. What makes a home truly “smart” is how its spaces are created to an optimal level without being stolen. The contiguity of the spaces defines a good flow of design, intersperses ample amounts of natural light and ventilation, reduces dependence on artificial light sources, and embodies all the hallmarks of smart and intelligent living.

healthy design
If the pandemic has taught us anything as a species, it's to prioritize health and wellness. However, wellness cannot be automated. It's a state of mind. A technologically advanced home should give users a sense of security. It must create a space where they can be mindful and give them the opportunity to become one with themselves and those around them. To achieve this goal, the user needs to understand what smart his home can do. The idea of smart technology is that it facilitates the user's lifestyle rather than being intrusive or visible. The idea of automation is that its existence should be like a second skin of nature. Only then can smart homes excel at creating environments that promote smart living.

Are you ready for the future?
Smart home technology needs to move beyond the checklists of designers and end users, and feature them as wish list items. It must be intrinsically integrated into a lifestyle of need, not a lifestyle of scarcity. When this balance is achieved, your smart home will not only be functional, but also timeless and beautiful. As end users and designers, it's important to look in the rearview mirror of your car as you drive into the future. The rearview mirror teaches us the balance between life and culture, from which we can adapt to the future that awaits us.
Smart homes and smart living are only possible if we recognize and respect the environment in which we live. We want a better, greener future for generations to come. To that end, responsible living is the only wise living option available to humanity.
