No vintage furniture lover would be unfamiliar with Dorothy Draper's unmistakable anti-minimalist aesthetic. Often, many are rooted in large prints and bright colors that embrace the “Hollywood Regency” style.
This style may be synonymous with the late '30s and '40s (when Dorothy Draper established herself as a celebrity designer in her own right), but it made a lasting impression well into the 21st century, starting with RuPaul's Living Room It's so timeless.
“RuPaul's Living Room is an ode to the great lady decorators of the 1930s and 40s, especially Dorothy Draper. Her high-glam style blends perfectly into this dramatic space.” comments designer Martin Lawrence Bullard. Martin, the designer responsible for RuPaul's Beverly Hills mansion, has curated an Art Deco haven that pays homage to history but inspires modernity.
Martin added an 18-foot metal arched window to design a Dorothy Draper-inspired space with “perfect drama and an explosion of natural light.” He decorated the windows with tangerine weaves he designed for The Shade Store, created a fireplace using pieces of rope dipped in plaster, and decorated it with built-in mirror panels.
“A chinoiserie-style emerald lacquer cabinet houses a collection of orange china and is balanced by an Elsie de Wolff slipper chair covered in Tony Duquette malachite fabric,” Martin explains. Masu.
“My own Stevie Mac rug, designed for The Rug Company, covers the floor, and a vintage 1950s brass and Murano glass lamp sits on an amethyst stone pedestal. Charming. An attractive (and very fun) design for a client.”

He is known for his trademark charm and exotic flair. To name a few examples.
With a style inspired by Dorothy Draper, Martin incorporated large geometric prints (in the form of rugs) and pockets of color with turquoise, emerald, and purple furniture. But despite its anti-minimalist aesthetic, Martin uses a white base to ground the entire living room, serving as a neutral base that allows colorful items to make an unparalleled statement.
This blank canvas is a reminder that it's surprisingly easy to emulate RuPaul and embrace Hollywood Regency style (even if it's on a small scale). The secret, explains North Carolina-based designer Jason Parker, is a timeless base of white, where print and color take center stage.

“White is an incredibly versatile color that never goes out of style and offers the most versatile palette. I especially like using this color in large spaces like the living room. , where it provides a neutral backdrop for a wide range of styles and designs,” he says.
“That hue always brings a sense of openness to a room. But increasingly, I'm playing with shades of white, textures, and undertones to evoke subtle differences in the feeling of a space as the eye moves through the room.” ” he explains.
For a bold white living room (like RuPaul's), layer saturated colors on key furniture pieces (sofa, sectional, chairs) and play with patterns on accents like pillows, chairs, and rugs. ”
