Color can be such a powerful thing in a room, especially in a child's room, where they are learning about and exploring the world every day. The rainbow is a symbol of joy, acceptance, and hope, especially if you're expecting a rainbow baby.
The rainbow theme comes in a variety of styles: from bold and bright to soft and muted. Depending on your style, you can have an explosion of color on every wall or you can decorate with a few striking items to jazz up the room.
This rainbow themed nursery is modeled after my son's nursery. It's bright and full of inspiration, culture and color. If you're looking for rainbow nursery ideas or inspiration for your own room, keep reading as we've included all the details below.
We started by painting the walls a Dunn-Edwards bright white, which gave us a blank canvas for all the colors we wanted to add. The door is a beautiful bright yellow, also by Dunn-Edwards in the color “Highlighter.” This color brings so much warmth and brightness to this colorful nursery.
How do you create the perfect nursery room?
The “perfect” nursery is the one that best suits you and your baby's needs.
If your room is small, try not to overcrowd it with furniture and decorations. Instead, keep the room as open as possible to make it feel spacious, and add some decorative items for fun, colorful touches.
On the other hand, if the room is large, plan how you want to arrange everything and what items will go in it — a kids room mood board is perfect for that. Then, start with the essential furniture and slowly add your favorite decor pieces until you're happy with it.
Rainbow Art
Art or gallery walls are a great way to add color to a room and display all the memorabilia you've collected. You can use a variety of colors and styles, but try to repeat a color at least once to create a unified look.
If you want more tips, we have a full guide on how to choose and layout a gallery wall In a child's room, a fun idea would be to have a gallery wall with custom neon lights as a focal point, like in the photo above.
Other ideas for rainbow gallery or accent walls include this rainbow wallpaper , rainbow watercolor dot wall decals , your favorite art prints, tapestries or personal sewing projects , and if you're even more handy, try making a rainbow photo collage or painting a rainbow striped wall using my tutorial .
Rainbow Bookshelf
Children's books come in every color of the rainbow, and by growing your collection, you can have a library of books to read with your kids and fill your walls with color.
You can DIY your own rainbow bookshelf by following my tutorial or buy one ready made.
Once you're ready, you can sort and organize your books by color, and eventually, you can even swap out your holiday books for each season.

What furniture should I have in my Rainbow Nursery?
When it comes to furniture, I think it's best to stick to larger pieces like dressers in white or neutral colors, so that the other colors and decor you're using in the room can pop.
One or two small, colorful pieces of furniture, like a chair, footstool or area rug, can act as accent pieces in the room. White furniture helps to calm the space without making it feel overwhelming.
The mint green rocking chair is a beautiful contrast to the bold rainbow colors used elsewhere. Quality products are best for use in a child's room – they will hold up as your child grows, and can be passed down and used in other children's rooms or other rooms in the house.

I paired the rocking chair with a colorful footstool made from vibrant Guatemalan and Mexican textiles. Furniture is a great way to naturally bring a touch of your family's culture into your child's nursery.
Should I buy a changing station or a dresser?
Opt for a dresser rather than a changing table – not only will it grow with your child, but it also provides extra storage space, which is always a plus.
Set it up under a gallery wall so kids can look at art and play with stuffed animals. I have this Jenny Lind dresser and love how whimsical it is!!!! (And it holds a lot!) But if you need even more space, this stackable storage bench is also perfect for storing books and toys.
To add colour, hang some jewellery or charms in the drawers or place some stuffed animals or toys inside.
rainbow bedding
Speaking of dressers, let's talk bedding. Depending on your color scheme, you might want a colorful sheet set and blanket, or you might prefer more neutral tones. Either way, bedding is another great opportunity to add color and warmth to your child's room.
The colorful sheets look great against the classic white crib! Our crib comes with an organic mattress and organic mattress pad (a must) that we love!
Rainbow decoration and DIY ideas
A nursery is a great way to incorporate your favorite DIY projects or create new ones to fit your space.
Some of my favorite nursery DIY projects are these rainbow latch hooks, which are soft and textured so they are perfect for a rainbow nursery.
A high-hanging non-woven wall hanging or a giant five-foot-tall stuffed cactus are great large pieces to fill empty wall space that needs a little color.
In this nursery, we used wicker animal heads to bring together other natural elements, like a changing basket. You could also add pom-pom crowns and garlands for a splash of color.
This balloon car print greets you at the entrance so you know exactly how colorful this kids room is from the moment you open the door.

Your child's nursery not only creates a cozy environment for you and your child, but it's also a great way to represent the special people and experiences that are important to your family. Adding special touches, whether handmade or gifted, will give this room a warm, inviting feel and, of course, burst with color.
