As long as funds are available and renovation plans are within guidelines, it is not uncommon to knock down walls and reconfigure HDB flats.
But going forward, the Housing Authority plans to make it even more convenient for homeowners.
Minister for National Development Desmond Lee announced on May 27 that a new pilot programme will be introduced for the Kallang Whampoa Build-to-Order (BTO) project, which is scheduled to commence in October.
The BTO project will comprise 80 three-room apartments and 230 four-room apartments and will be located close to Lavender MRT station.
In the White Flat pilot, the living and bedroom spaces of the flat will be laid out as one continuous space, with no wall separating them.
This gives homeowners a “blank canvas” on which they can design and customize their apartment according to their needs and preferences.
HDB explained that flat buyers in this pilot project will be able to choose the White Flat layout when they are invited to book their flat, and the price of the White Flat will take into account the absence of dividing walls, although this is yet to be finalised.
If you do not select the White Flat layout when booking your flat you will be provided with a Standard layout with walls.
More details about the project will be released closer to the sales start date.
