New Google Nest thermostat leaks water, along with long-delayed temperature sensor

A new version of the Nest Learning Thermostat could be on the way, according to leaked promotional photos. Looking at the photos, it looks like the new smart thermostat will have a similar design to its predecessor, but Google may have switched from a moving dial to a touchscreen.

The image is Arsene Lupin Posted on Twitter and shared by 9to5Google, these appear to be leaked promotional materials advertising a new version of the Google Nest Temperature Sensor that will be compatible with three Nest thermostats, including the currently unreleased Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen).

The new learning thermostat has rounded glass instead of flat, and it also appears to have an improved interface: While the 2015 Nest learning thermostat used a rotate and push/click interface, the redesigned device's larger glass surface and thinner metal bezel suggest it may feature touch controls.

In terms of actual features, this may not be a huge leap forward from the 2015 model. According to an FCC listing published last month, wireless functionality will likely be the same, with a Soli low-energy motion sensor, but we can't say much more than that at this point. Matter integration is one of the most obvious upgrades, especially for a thermostat this high-end, but we'll have to wait and see.

Hopefully, the similarity in design will make upgrading from the 2015 model easy without any additional wiring.

A long overdue update

The original Nest Temperature Sensor was released in 2018, so the Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd Gen) has been a long time coming.

It looks very similar to its predecessor – a small circular device that can be mounted on a wall or placed on a shelf – and connects to the Google Home app, allowing you to set the temperature in a room at a specific time.

It would have been nice to have connected radiator valves like those made by Hive that would allow you to control the temperature in individual rooms, but there's no sign of anything like that coming.

The Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) may be released after the Google Pixel event on August 13. We'll let you know more details as they become available.
