As a self-described minimalist, I know all too well the struggle that comes with mixing and matching patterns. My apartment features an almost entirely whitewashed aesthetic, except for a vintage-inspired indigo dresser and a few plants bringing a splash of color. The lack of pattern is all too real, as my design style tends to lean toward understated. And no matter how much I enjoy that aesthetic, my space feels incomplete without moments of intricate contrast. Textures have limitations, and there’s only so much plants and potted greenery I can fit in my small studio. That’s why having a few understated accent pieces with delicate prints can really make a big impact. Below, I’ve shared some helpful tips for mixing and matching patterns, especially for those who are minimalists at heart.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN KENT JOHNSON Whether you're decorating a kitchen, bathroom, or outdoor area, tiles have the power to instantly change the feel of a space. Take this Parisian-style bathroom, for example, where the clever designer used modern geometric tiles on the walls and floor, adding glamorous detail to the whitewashed space. Not only do the elaborate tiles add major personality to the bathroom, they also reduce the need to clutter the space decoratively.

Cushions are a lifesaver for those who prefer the freest approach to decorating with patterns. Whether you're embracing new trends or simply trying out a new style, they're undoubtedly one of the easiest ways to introduce fresh prints into your space. Not only are they an effortless way to add a pop of color to a monochromatic scheme, but they also help establish a dynamic finish with elements of depth. Feeling especially bold? Bring on some patterned cushions to add even more interest.
When it comes to mixing and matching prints, keep it simple with a cohesive color palette—it's also perfectly fine to stay monochrome and choose two subtly distinct patterns instead, just like Madewell designer Joyce Lee did in her beautiful home.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SKYE PARROTT This is a bold approach, but the results are great. Don't be afraid to experiment with colorful pattern play and mix mediums for a dynamic effect. Paint and wallpaper can coexist, especially when you stick to a monochromatic palette. In this vibrant Nashville home, striped details are featured on the living room's built-in shelves, giving the area a bit of a classy feel. The trick to making this work is to decorate the shelves in complementary colors and keep the rest of the decor accessories to a minimum.

Whether you choose a modern, geometric, globally inspired or traditional aesthetic, combining contrasting color details with subtle patterns can go a long way. A rug can make even the most bare-bones room feel complete.
In this light-filled California bedroom, global textiles provide striking contrast to the all-white, minimalist decor scheme. A muted blue is borrowed from the bed's woven throw, while a delicately patterned floor piece helps finish off the room.

Another easy way to decorate with pattern (yes, we're sensing a trend here too): If you want an entirely whitewashed space, stick with that style and bring in color and pattern in the form of vibrant wall art. We're not suggesting a giant gallery wall here, but a series of prints that will help bring a fresh perspective to your decor. If that doesn't appeal to you, opt for an oversized print to hang above a console in your entryway or at the foot of your dining room. Colorful pieces, like this one, can say a lot.

After all, it's all about creating the space you feel most at home in. Speaking from experience, incorporating pattern into a minimalist plan can seem daunting, but starting small definitely helps. Focus on a particular room or a specific area, like a sofa or bookshelf. Experiment with textures and incorporate color to find combinations that resonate with you. Who knows, before you know it, your home will be full of inspiring, vibrant prints.
