Life-changing hack for hanging Christmas garland goes viral on TikTok

It's finally December, which means it's officially time to start decorating for Christmas, if you haven't already. If you're still in the middle of decorating, why not try out some of the Christmas garland hanging hacks that have been making the rounds on TikTok and Instagram in recent weeks.

A revolutionary holiday decorating tip is to hang garland on a tension shower curtain rod over an entry arch, doorway, or even between kitchen cabinets. The end result is stunning and won't damage your walls.

To try this trick at home, start by securing a curtain rod at eye level. Arrange and twist some green plants around the rod (you may need to use zip ties to secure them), then layer on some decor items like twinkly lights, stylish ornaments, holiday bells, and ribbons. Once you're happy with the final look, raise the tension rod into place and tighten it as much as possible.

Interior designer @thekwendyhome was one of the first to share this holiday secret on social media just four weeks ago. Since then, many bloggers, influencers, and interior designers have been giving it a try. We reached out to a few content creators to see what it was like trying out this trending hack. Spoiler alert: Most people rave about how amazingly easy it is to execute.

“As someone who hates drilling holes in walls and loves easy DIYs, this trick was perfect for me. The garland is super easy to install and there's no need to worry about tension rods falling off. When I first saw this trick I saw a lot of people using it on doors and hallways, but I had a hard time hanging a garland over my sink last year so this was a great solution.” — Danielle Green of @greenssweethome

“My daughter Abby, who is also my content assistant, joined in the fun! It was surprisingly easy! I just had to bend the garland a little and it stayed in place! The key to keeping everything secure is to keep the rods at arm's height while styling. I wrapped the garland around the rods multiple times and bent them, and it worked great! No strings or nails needed… I went a step further and layered on battery-operated twinkle lights and floral picks.” — Brendt Blanks for @shegaveitago

Try these curtain rail hacks at home

“I saw @kwendyhome share this hack on Instagram and thought it was so cool and easy I had to try it myself. I started sweating when it fell off after 2 minutes. I had bought everything I needed so I didn't give up after a few falls. I think the trick is to get the rods as tight as you can and then tighten them even more. I added lots of baubles and sparkly things to hide the bits of rod showing through the garland.” — Lacey Farber for @ponderosaandplaid

“I actually have a small opening so all the other rods were too big so I bought this rod for my shower stall and it worked perfectly! It was a little difficult at first – my husband helped me and we kept trying to get the rod tight but as I turned the rod to tighten it the garland kept falling off. We decided to attach the garland to the rod with zip ties and once the rod was in place at the top, we added more zip ties to keep it in place.” — Stephanie Hanna for @stephaniehannablog

“I think this hack is simple, but it's a little tricky to keep the garland in place and from slipping around. I found that adding extra embellishments helped to keep the garland from slipping around. I used tension rods, garland, S-hooks, rustic bells, beaded wood garland, wicker lights, and fun ribbon. By distributing the weight evenly and making sure the tension rods were securely fastened, I had no problem keeping everything in place.” — Gianna Nicolette Caputo for @indie.boho.nest
