Welcome to our home office!! Johnny and I are so excited to finally share this space with you. It's been nearly 10 months in the making and it's still not 100% complete, but we're happy to be a part of it and work on it. We built our new home in May and identified our major priorities first. I already had a desk in my apartment, so I was functionally able to work. We wanted to spend some time in the space and see what we really needed before ordering a large amount of furniture. We look forward to working with West elm to share how you can create a functional and productive home office.
work space
I know our home office isn't the prettiest, but for us, we knew it had to work. We dream of gorgeous executive desks, great chairs, and no cords, but that's not something we can commit to. There are tons of cables and cords, things to connect to, laptop stands, Bluetooth keyboards, and more.
Our L-shaped desk
We quickly realized that the old desk in our apartment was too small and committed to upgrading the property. These Parsons L-shaped desks are perfect. Due to supply chain issues, we actually only had one large part in stock for several months, but we still had plenty of room.
Our dream is to have our own workspace where we can spread out, in addition to space for collaboration. We put the desks together to make a T-shape. This allows us to do our own thing on our side, and if we need to chat or discuss, we can turn and spread out in the middle. T also allows you to easily share each other's screens since they are side by side.
Another nice feature of the L-shaped desk is that it has drawers. Although it's technically a filing cabinet, it's great for hiding things you need, but you don't want to clutter up your workspace.
best desk chair
Our desk chair is a worthwhile investment, especially for those who work from home or feel like they don't have enough office chairs. I've owned it since 2014 and it's still in great condition. It is ergonomically designed and therefore very comfortable. I have never had back pain, stiffness, or coccyx pain while sitting in this chair. Ours is fully adjustable and very useful.
Other items
We both rely on things like laptop stands, Bluetooth keyboards, and trackpads. Don't underestimate how much bad posture and unergonomic setup can impact your productivity. Of course, I also needed a place to display my items, so these brass shelves will allow me to store my memorabilia.
detail
Creating a home office that you'll want to spend time in requires more than just a desk and chair. I wanted it to feel beautiful and a little bit cozy. You can create a beautiful home office while maintaining the functionality of your home office.
area rug
I incorporated this geometric area rug and it's so soft and luxurious. It does shed quite a bit, but I don't mind because my feet are so comfortable. It's more beige than it looks online, but it warms up the space beautifully.
statement wall
A few months ago I painted two walls Tricorn Black. By the way, a word of advice: do not paint your room black at night. About halfway through, we really regretted it. It looked very dark. But already he had half of two walls completed. I told Johnny that she couldn't quit now and that I would finish the job and see what happened in the morning. After all, it's an easy fix because you literally just paint. The next morning, the sun streamed in through the large windows and we fell in love. I knew my intuition was right!
To bring some style to the statement wall, we added a ladder bookshelf. Yes, we color code our books. Because it turns out that we tend to remember the jacket color before we remember the author or title. We both love reading and have a lot of books. Not only does this display your collection beautifully, but it also makes it easier to find exactly what you're looking for. I wish this bookshelf was a little taller, but it has enough space for my collection. This item is currently sold out, but similar items are available here.
To complete the wall, I hung a Samsung Frame TV with a light-colored wooden bezel. it is perfect. I love how you can change the mood by changing the art. Also great as a background for a Zoom call.

When discussing the idea of a shared home office, we knew that functionality had to be a priority. I dream of a gorgeous executive desk, grand chair, and no cords, but that's not something I can do right now. There are tons of cables and cords, things to connect to, laptop stands, Bluetooth keyboards, and more.

We quickly realized that the old desk in our apartment was too small and committed to upgrading the property when we had the chance. These Parsons L-shaped desks are perfect. Due to supply chain issues, we actually only had one large part in stock for several months, but we still had plenty of room.
Our dream is to have our own workspace where we can spread out, in addition to space for collaboration. One of the home office ideas we shared was to create a version of that here. So he put his desks together and made a T-shape. This allows us to do our own thing on our side, and if we want to chat or discuss, we can turn and spread out in the middle. T also allows you to easily share each other's screens since they are side by side.

For one of our shared home office ideas, we actually had NEAT Method Highland Park come out and organize our office closets and organize them to make our office super functional. I will discuss this in more detail in another blog post soon. We custom built and installed an elfa closet and would love to walk you through the details.
