A new interior design trend is making the rounds on TikTok, and you probably didn't see it coming. Introducing the “unexpected red” theory.
The unexpected theory of red, introduced by creator Taylor Simon (@intayriors) in a viral TikTok video, states that “Adding something large or small of red to a room that doesn't quite match will automatically change the look.” It's an idea. Better. “Whether it's a bright red pedestal sink in a moody teal bathroom or a red suede headboard that pops against a purple accent wall, Simon suggests this color is a sure-fire addition to any palette. She even claims that red is a neutral.
At first, the concept may seem surprising. Red doesn't seem like the best color to refresh your bedroom. Neutral colors are usually more subdued and subtle, such as lighter shades of white, cream, and gray, or darker variations of black, brown, and charcoal. In other words, it is a versatile color that can be matched with anything. But given that logic, the Unexpected Red Theory may be onto something. If red really looks good in every room and in every scenario, then shouldn't we call it a neutral?
We asked a professional for their opinion. New York City-based interior designer Emma She Beryl breaks down the unexpected red theory and shares additional decorating tips on how to incorporate red into your home.
What is the Unexpected Red Theory?
The unexpected red theory is the idea that adding pops of red to furniture like sofas and small accents like table lamps can make any space look better. But where do these red accents really shine? Where they don't seem to belong or look good based on the color of the room or the items nearby.
Beryl doesn't necessarily think that this makes red a neutral color, as he agrees with this theory. Instead, she believes that colors simply being vibrant enough are enough to stand out and attract attention no matter the situation. ”[Red] “This goes with almost anything, but don't be fooled. It goes well, but when added as a surprise element, as the theory of striking and unexpected red suggests, it usually becomes the star of the show “It will be,” she told POPSUGAR.
If you're still not sure how or why the unexpected red theory works, it's important to consider tones and the color wheel. “I don't think there's any other color like red on the color wheel, so adding red to any space draws attention to that object,” says Beryl. “It's both warm and cool at the same time. It pairs well with warm colors like orange and yellow, as well as cooler colors like blue and green.” Red may not officially be called a neutral, but , has similar properties that make it versatile and unique.
How to implement the unexpected red theory into your own space
There are no hard and fast rules for decorating your space, but if you want some tips for trying out the unexpected red theory at home, Beryl has some suggestions.
Start small. “The easiest way to incorporate color when you're not 100% sure is with small decorations. Adding a pop of red through a vase or lampshade can be an eye-catching moment,” she says. say. What if you want to get bigger? Try larger furniture like a lounge chair or daybed. “The unexpected red theory states that her one item in the space is red, so choose something within your comfort zone.”
Consider your color palette. Red can be paired with anything, but Beryl especially likes to pair it with neutral colors. “Red becomes a focal point and makes her eyes even more excited,” she says. She also likes to use it with a streamlined color palette. “I like watching [red] A pop of red will really stand out in a very tailored room with a strong two- or three-tone color palette, such as a blue-and-green-and-patterned room, or a yellow-and-orange room. ”
Try something other than red. Not interested in red? This theory works equally well with other colors such as pink and green. “It makes sense that pink is close to red because it evokes similar emotions, but green also reminds people of nature, so adding a pop of green can be calming,” says Beryl. say.
If you find yourself obsessed with little pops of red in your space, don't be afraid to add some unexpected red theory to other aspects of your life. For example, you can pair a neutral outfit with a pop of red lipstick or pair red heels with an all-black fit. You'll probably soon see why red is the best of all colors.
