How to decorate with vintage mirrors

For anyone working on a budget, finding affordable wall art can be a daunting task. I'll admit that the wall above my couch is still pitifully undecorated (it's been 7 months since I moved…yippee!). Possible solutions include large-scale DIY art or inexpensive prints and posters, but there's a new approach: affordable vintage mirrors. Often found at flea markets and thrift stores, they're inexpensive and help make a room look bigger and brighter. It's a win-win!

Where to find it: If there aren't many thrift stores in your area, search Etsy, Chairish, and 1stdibs (and don't forget peer-to-peer selling apps like Craigslist and 5Miles). If you're using the mirror purely as decor, don't worry about dark spots or cloudiness on the glass; these spots add character and can cause sellers to lower the price.

If you love the look of a gallery wall but your budget means you can only afford one amazing piece of art, fill the void with an inexpensive thrift store mirror, like this One Claire Day find on sfgirlbybay.

Found by Film Photography Location, the dressing room shelves of the Foster House, a former artist studio, are lined with vintage frameless mirrors. A rimmed shelf lets you tilt the mirror and avoid drilling holes in the wall.

Above the stove is an unexpected place to stack mirrors, but they can add a homely feel to a traditionally bleak space. The Lonny mirror pictured above sits on a simple white shelf, but be sure to use a shelf with edges or secure it to the wall to prevent it from falling.

With their striking shapes, it's no surprise that these mirrors belong to a French antiques dealer with 15 years' experience. Take a look around the rest of her eclectic home at Milk Decoration.
