While Apple already offers its own Home app to help users control and manage their HomeKit devices, there are several third-party apps that extend such functionality, one of which is Controller for HomeKit, which got a major update this week with a new “Floor Plan” feature for mapping your home in 3D.
Controller for HomeKit
Floor Plan allows Controller for HomeKit users to create a 3D model of their home using the LiDAR scanner on a compatible iPhone or iPad. Once the model is generated, all HomeKit devices can be mapped to this 3D model.
“This 3D model can be added with buttons for direct control of devices, viewing current sensor values, running scenes and workflows, and room navigation. This gives users a visual overview and allows intuitive control of Apple Home, for example by turning lights on/off or checking the state of contact sensors,” the developers explain.
Interestingly, even if you don't have an iPhone or iPad with a LiDAR scanner, you can still use the feature using a friend's device: just scan the App Clip from their compatible device and export the 3D model to your own device. The developers also say that all scans are processed locally, so the 3D model of your home is never sent to a third-party server.
In addition to Floor Plan, Controller for HomeKit also offers features like complex automation, notifications, setup code backup, workflows, widgets, and more.
Controller for HomeKit is available as a free download from the App Store, while the Pro version is available as a paid subscription or lifetime license.
