The Scott brothers recently stopped by Good Housekeeping's New York office to share the top design mistakes to avoid, decorating myths to watch out for, and more. Jonathan and Drew's best advice for homeowners right now is:
Design mistakes to avoid
Choose epoxy-treated countertops. “Don't put epoxy on your countertops; it won't last long!” — Jonathan Hang a patina mirror. “People like to do something fancy with their mirrors, like patina mirrors that give them an old-fashioned feel. But I would say don't do that to mirrors in your bathroom. ” — Drew Tackle complex DIY projects like wiring and plumbing. “Why DIY to save money when it actually costs money in the end?” — Drew Barn Door Installation. “Barn doors are overkill. Great for certain solutions, but not great for all solutions.” — Jonathan
Design myths you should ignore
Hardwood is the only option. “There are better products that are much more durable. Luxury vinyl is one example (of a material) that looks like hardwood but is much more durable.” — Drew Keeping your home tidy It is best to have “Instead, clear out the clutter. Decide on things that show your personality and get rid of everything else.” — Jonathan Match all your furniture and accessories. “People think they have to match things in an open floor plan.
