To the uninitiated, the old woodshed and its surroundings probably look like nothing more than a graveyard of cobwebs and lawnmowers. But when homeowner Cassidy offered to show Ben Napier her father's shed full of reclaimed wood in “Hometown” Season 2, Episode 7, “Move It Or Lose It,” Napier knew exactly what he was looking at: treasures. Cassidy wanted to build a large family dining table for his wife, Robin, so Napier dug out long cypress planks, tongue-and-groove pine flooring and big blocks of Douglas fir from his stockpile and drew up a plan.
Cassidy and Robin's new home was a 100-year-old farmhouse that Robin inherited. It needed a lot of repairs and care, especially after the move, and the renovations would likely involve a fresh coat of paint on much of the old family home. Napier's plan, with Cassidy's help, was to create a rustic dining table that would take the house back to its roots and place in a rustic dining room that retained some sense of the building's history. The tabletop they created had a cypress plank down the middle and was surrounded by pine flooring along the sides and breadboard ends. (Breadboard ends are a classic table-building technique designed to minimize warping of the wood used for the top.) The legs were simple posts carved from blocks of fir. Erin Napier completed the farmhouse look with a grain-sack table runner.
