Buy smart home tech even if you hate it

No one can blame you for disliking smart home tech, and it doesn't make you a Luddite. The market is mature, but it's still full of confusing devices and incompatible platforms. But even if you're not tech-savvy and avoid smart home gadgets like the plague, you should still get a Ring Video Doorbell.

Ring makes a variety of devices, but there's only one that smart home haters should care about: the Ring Video Doorbell Wireless. It's a great entry point into the smart home market for a few reasons. It's easy to install, simple to use, and packed with handy features. Plus, you get the peace of mind of knowing who's at your door before they even approach it. And there's one more reason to buy a Ring Video Doorbell: it's on sale for Amazon Prime subscribers for the best price ever, just $49.99.

Video doorbells have become so popular thanks in large part to Ring, but the company now has a lot of competitors, many of which offer great products that are great alternatives to Ring devices.

One example is the Blink Video Doorbell , a cheaper option that's popular among BGR readers, and also the Arlo Essential Video Doorbell , which is currently on deep discount.

Both are great options, but they fall short of the Ring Video Doorbell in a few key areas. Perhaps the biggest drawback is its tight integration with Amazon's wildly popular Alexa assistant. This is one of the things I like most about my Ring Video Doorbell: I can instantly see who's at the door on any Alexa device, like an Echo Show or Fire TV.

The entry-level Ring Video Doorbell costs $99.99, making it the cheapest wireless model that Ring makes. The only cheaper option is the Ring Video Doorbell Wired, but this gets its power from the old doorbell's wiring and must be installed in place of your existing doorbell.

A typical Ring video doorbell is wireless, meaning it's powered by a battery rather than doorbell wires, meaning you can set it up anywhere in just a few minutes. Seriously, it couldn't be easier.

If you already have a doorbell and want to use the same wiring, this model has an optional wire you can connect to so you don't have to worry about charging the battery. Or, if you want to avoid all the hassle, you can go for the fully wireless option and place it anywhere. The included rechargeable battery lasts for 6-12 months depending on usage. I installed this model in my parents' house and I'm getting closer to 12 months between charges.

Amazon has had a lot of sales on the Ring Video Doorbell lately, but they didn't include this entry-level model. That finally changed today, though, as a Prime subscription will bring the Ring Video Doorbell down to $49.99, the lowest price yet for this model.

Or you can buy it as a set with a Ring Chime for $69.99, which is even more of a savings than buying just the doorbell, as the set would normally cost $135.
