Bed Bath & Beyond will close its doors to the Burlington community on April 8th. The store is one of five stores to close its retail operations in North Carolina, with others in Raleigh, Gastonia, Greenville and Hickory. The chain plans to close more than 280 stores across the country in the coming months.
Located in Burlington's University Commons, this home furnishings store sells bedding, storage containers, kitchenware, bathroom essentials and more. Elon University student move-in day, which typically occurs at the beginning of each academic year, is popular. Elon News Network visited his Burlington location twice. Employees at the store had no further comment on the closure.
Wellesley Cohen, a senior at Elon, said she has been shopping at the Burlington store since her freshman year and worries that future students will encounter problems at other stores on Freshman Day. Told.
“We're going to have so many students shopping at Target, Walmart and TJMAXX that there will be an increase in traffic and disruption to these stores during the transition period,” Cohen said.
Mr Cohen said the store's closure would have an impact on the local community.
“I feel their closure is a negative for the Elon community, especially as the student body is growing,” Cohen said. “There will be one less store where new students can shop.”
News of the store's closing was shared on Elon's parent company's Facebook page. Marcia Jane DiFrango, one of Elon's parents, said she has seen many Elon students shop at the location over the past four years and considers it an important business for the community. He said he was there.
“The majority of students shop there, and I can't believe that an Elon-led company hasn't guaranteed that its stores will stay open,” DiFrango said.
Cory Wilder '81, a Bed Bath & Beyond customer and Elon alumnus, also said the location's closure would have a negative impact on Elon's student transfer process.
“It's sad,” Wilder said. “Another large store will be closing. It will definitely affect the economy and a lot of students will be using it to buy things for moving so they will be upset.”
The University Commons Shopping Plaza also has two other stores with home goods for the community to purchase, including Target, TJMAXX and Ross.
