Q. My 70-year-old neighbor recently sold her house because she wanted to move to a smaller apartment in town. When I visited her, she showed me around the house and seemed very happy in her new space. She described her house as a “smart home.” What does that mean exactly? Why is it important?
A. Congratulations to your friend on her new home. Many people want to downsize as they get older, and finding a new place to live can be difficult. I'm glad she was able to find something that suited her needs.
A smart home is a house, condo, or apartment that is equipped with a variety of technologies aimed at improving security, comfort, and convenience. They usually run through internet access and can be operated whether you're at home or not. Examples of smart home technologies include:
A thermostat allows you to schedule or remotely control the temperature in your home, and some people say it helps conserve energy and save money by adjusting the temperature while they're away.
Lighting systems can automatically light dark hallways or corridors when they sense someone approaching, which can be especially helpful for people worried about falling.
Home appliances like washers, dryers, ovens, TVs, etc. There are also smart refrigerators that can create shopping lists when you're running low on items and look up recipes based on the ingredients you have on hand.
Another example of smart technology are security cameras and systems that allow you to monitor your home while you're away and see who's at your door. These devices allow you to see and talk to people who come to your door.
AgeSpan recently partnered with USAging and Amazon to bring its smart security systems to consumers. Starting this summer, seniors served by AgeSpan in the Merrimack Valley and North Shore areas will receive a free Ring video doorbell or Stick Up camera, along with a lifetime subscription to the device and technical support from AgeSpan to learn how to use the system.
