Columbia Pictures and Blumhouse on Wednesday released the first trailer for “Afraid,” a thriller starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston that is due in theaters on Aug. 30.

Written and directed by Chris Weitz (About a Boy), Afraid follows Curtis (Cho) and his family as they are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: AIA, a digital family assistant. Taking smart homes to the next level, AIA can seemingly do it all once the unit and all the sensors and cameras are installed in the home. She learns the family's behaviors and begins to predict their needs. And she makes sure nothing and no one gets in their way.

The AI-themed thriller also stars Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, David Dastmalchian and Keith Carradine, and is produced by Jason Blum, Weitz and Andrew Miano, with Beatriz Sequeira, Paul O. Davis, Dan Bargoyen and Britta Lawings serving as executive producers.

Sony's most recent film release is “Bad Boys 2,” which has grossed more than $333 million worldwide, but upcoming slate includes Apple's Greg Berlanti-directed “Fly Me to the Moon” starring Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson (July 12), the children's book-based film “Harold and the Purple Crayon” (August 2), and the romance “It Ends With Us,” starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni (August 9), among many others.

Films scheduled for release this weekend include “Reagan,” directed by Sean McNamara and starring Dennis Quaid, Lionsgate's Los Angeles riots movie “1992” starring Scott Eastwood and the late Ray Liotta, Purdy Distribution's “Tokyo Cowboy” and Blue Fox Entertainment's romantic drama “Take My Hand.”
