According to search engine giant Google, “steampunk” was the most searched for interior design style in the United States this year.
This is based on data from Google's top trending searches – searches that have seen a sustained surge in traffic this year compared to 2022. The data was compiled this year as part of the Year in Search 2023 report.
According to designer doors and ironmongery store Rustica, the steampunk style has its roots in the Victorian era, making it both old-fashioned and modern.
“The designs are highly mechanical, almost industrial, using materials such as polished brass, steel, wood and leather,” Rustica writes on its website, “and could be described as pseudo-Victorian, with an upcycled love for the old, the repaired, the reworked and the imperfect.”
The other four top design styles include “Maximalist,” “Modern,” “Minimalist,” and “California Coastal.”
Other design styles that saw an increase in search traffic include “brutalist,” “bohemian chic,” “French country,” “art deco,” and “beach.”
When it comes to architecture, the most searched style is “Modern,” followed by “Creole,” “Craftsman,” “Neolithic,” and “Second Empire.”
Other most searched styles at the end of the top 10 include “Midcentury,” “French Baroque,” “Italian Villa,” “Contemporary,” and “Bauhaus.”
Google also revealed the top search results in categories beyond furniture, including music, TV, fashion, sports, and gaming, and you can see the full list of these in the Year in Search 2023 report.
