Buying art can be an expensive endeavor – a large canvas piece can cost more than $200 – but one Kmart shopper has come up with a surprisingly easy, budget-friendly hack for making your own large, custom canvas art piece using everyday items.
Sharing striking before and after photos, she revealed how she gave her bathroom a modern makeover in no time using $10 bedsheets purchased from the discount retailer – and the end result is sure to impress fellow Kmart shoppers.
“I was getting bored of the canvas in my bathroom but loved the size of it, so I had a great idea,” she explained in a Facebook group featuring Kmart hacks and decorating ideas.
To freshen up the aging original canvas, she took a new single quilt cover, placed it over the old print, stretched it and stapled it in place.

“I'm really happy with the results,” she said, adding that she had enough material left over to make matching lampshades for her living room.

Her incredible before and after post quickly garnered over 100 comments, with several home DIYers calling her hack “pure genius,” with some even saying they'd like to try it for themselves.
“Wow! Great idea! Thank you so much! I have a canvas I can do this on!” one person commented.

“Well done, it's great to see people thinking outside the box to recycle. If you use your imagination you can save a lot of money,” said another.
“How clever! I'd never thought of that. Amazing,” added a third.
Will it last?
Her idea was met with praise, but some people were concerned that the material would grow mold after a while and questioned whether it was suitable for a bathroom.
“Looks great! I love the new design. Can you tell me how to put this in a humid bathroom?” one person asked, while another added: “Wouldn't that be a good place for mould to grow?”
But several others swore there was an easy solution: one suggested simply spraying the fabric with Scotchguard, while another suggested using a cheap patterned shower curtain from Shein to achieve the same look.
$10 Kmart quilts are also popular bedroom decor pieces.
It's not just the materials that work
The trick isn't all that new to some – one woman said she's been using it for years to save money on decorating her home, even creating seasonal pieces using different types of fabric.
“I made this years ago out of Christmas fabric, and now I just get the canvas out at Christmas time,” she said, sharing her clever idea.

“I bought some canvases from Spotlight Bargains and have been doing the same with colourful prints,” a second person shared with another, who said: “I did this too, it's a great idea when you can't find what you want.”
Another woman revealed that she did something similar with an old canvas at home, but used wallpaper instead of fabric.
