Nicole Franzen
Modernity exists in every era. Central to this concept is invention. One huge statement of modernity can move a room forward. Andre Herrero of Charlap Hyman & Herrero built a double-height steel fireplace with a hidden compartment for the client's television in the living room of Pier-a-Terre in West Hollywood. This material is reminiscent of modern symbols such as spaceships and factories. Contemporary art, like a centerpiece-shaped sculpture by Olivia Erlanger that hangs across from the fireplace, also helps keep things fresh. In such an environment, it also makes sense to choose antiques, if you balance them with modern elements.
