Hive, an advanced home technology provider, and Daikin, a heat pump manufacturer, have announced a long-term collaboration to make net zero easier by helping customers control their heat pumps through the Hive app.
The partnership will integrate Daikin Altherma 3 heat pumps with Hive devices, giving customers greater visibility when controlling their home heating. This includes allowing homeowners to personalize heating schedules, track spending, and set budgets, while also allowing heat pumps to be used when electricity is cheap and environmentally friendly due to low demand on the grid. This includes optimizing.
Customers can control heat pump usage through the Hive app. The Hive app is a whole-home smart hub for connectivity across heating, lighting, batteries, and electric vehicle chargers.
The companies plan to pilot the integration later this year and broadly roll out the product offering once testing is complete.
Gail Parker from the Hive said: “Home heating is one of the UK's biggest sources of carbon emissions and we need to work together to meet this challenge.” Integrating Daikin heat pumps with market-leading Hive technology makes electric heating affordable and simple by providing the visibility you need to control your heat pump and energy usage.
“We are committed to adding heat pumps to the Hive ecosystem of popular products, giving our customers an easy way to view and manage all their devices in one easy-to-use app.”
Hive, now owned by British Gas, was founded in 2013 and has installed two million thermostats that it claims can reduce homes' carbon footprint.
Ian Bevan, Daikin's director of housing new business, commented: “If the UK is to meet its legally binding commitment to reach net zero by 2050, we need to decarbonise domestic spaces and water heating. Smart controllers like Hive and low carbon heat Combining pumps not only gives you more control, but also allows you to achieve optimal temperatures and save even more money at the same time.
“Daikin is excited to work with Hive to fully integrate their smart controller technology with our market-leading heat pump technology. This collaboration will help tens of thousands of people step away from home heating. It has the potential to reduce carbon emissions and help combat climate change.”
As well as helping customers optimize their heat pump use and make it more affordable, Hive and British Gas will soon be launching a heat pump pricing structure. This is aimed at reducing running costs and encouraging the installation of heat pumps, but it is still less than 40% behind the rate needed to reach the government's 2028 target of 600,000 parks.
