Reuse with flair
Martinez said online marketplaces and thrift stores can be a great place to find “hidden treasures” to enhance your outdoor space.
“That old wooden ladder? That could make an attractive vertical garden,” he said.
“Those mismatched chairs? A cozy painted seating corner.
“When it comes to reusing items on a budget, there are no limits to creativity.”
I upgraded my backyard on a $1,000 budget – added a privacy fence, furniture, and decorations, and I didn't even have to pay for them.
“Don't underestimate the allure of stolen treasure,” he added.
“From quirky garden gnomes to vintage lanterns, thrift stores are a veritable treasure trove of unique décor pieces that add character to your outdoor space.
“Enjoy the thrill of the hunt and unearth gems that reflect your style, all at an affordable price.”
DIY decoration
Martinez spoke passionately about the “joy” of unleashing your inner artist with decorations tailored to your taste.
He shared several ways DIY-savvy homeowners can reduce costs on accessories and furniture.
Pallets are the unsung heroes of budget-friendly DIY projects.

“You can turn ordinary stones into attractive garden markers, paint terracotta pots in vibrant hues, or use reclaimed wood to create personalized signs,” he said.
“DIY projects not only save you money, they also inject personality and charm into your space.
“Pallets are the unsung heroes of budget-friendly DIY projects,” he added.
“Purchase some at your local store, or ask around, they’re often free.
“With minimal effort, you can create pallet furniture, vertical planters, and even makeshift decks.
“With just one coat of paint, you can enhance the aesthetic appeal and transform your space into a rustic retreat.”
eco-friendly savings
“Develop your green thumb by growing your own herbs, vegetables, and flowers,” says Martinez.
“Gardening is not only therapeutic, it saves you money on groceries and enhances the outdoor atmosphere.
“Create a sustainable atmosphere by using inexpensive containers, recycled materials, and building raised beds with reclaimed wood.”
The advice comes after gardening expert Fiona Jenkins revealed that herbs such as chives, mint and rosemary are the easiest foods for beginners to grow.
Other vegetables that are easy to grow include tomatoes, carrots, potatoes and strawberries, she said.
How to turn your backyard into a little paradise
Houna Bech is an interior designer and founder of the style blog With Houna.
She shared with The US Sun her five tips for transforming a bleak outdoor space into a “sensory little paradise.”
embrace nature
“Use landscaping, trees, flowers, and the organic environment as your muse,” she said.
2. Bringing the inside out
“Repeat color palettes, textures, and materials to make the transition between indoors and outdoors seamless,” she said.
3. Create zones for specific purposes
“Maybe I'll design a luxurious cabana with a plush lounger and vanity for an outdoor makeup session with my girlfriends,” she said.
4. Make comfort a priority
“I'm talking about cloud-like sectionals, upholstered daybeds, and oversized weatherproof poufs that you can really wrap yourself in,” she said.
5. Be creative
“Finally, transform your entire outdoor area into an artistic installation,” says Beck.
perfect atmosphere
Martinez said lighting is important in setting the tone for an “outdoor sanctuary.”
“Harness the power of inexpensive string lights, solar-powered lanterns, or DIY mason jar light fixtures to cast a warm glow without burning a hole in your wallet,” he said.
“For an enchanting touch, weave fairy lights between the leaves or hang them overhead to create a magical atmosphere.”
At Walmart, a two-pack of decorative solar-powered lanterns costs $21.98.
One customer raved about the beauty of their style, calling it “a work of art,” while another said it looked “expensive” and could be worn year-round.
Outdoor string lights are also available in store for $5.97.
“Elevate your outdoor comfort with affordable textiles and cushioning,” Martinez continued.
“Visit discount stores and clearance sections for affordable outdoor rugs, cushions, and throws.
“Layer textures, patterns, and colors to create a cozy sanctuary where you can relax and recharge without spending a fortune.
“Remember, the key to budget-friendly backyard upgrades is creativity, resourcefulness, and a little DIY spirit.
“With a little ingenuity and the right investment, you can transform your outdoor space into a haven that reflects your unique style and provides endless enjoyment for years to come.”
