Family homes have to solve many practical problems in terms of functionality and durability, but appearance is often secondary. In homes with young children, you want to make sure the floor surfaces are spill- and stain-resistant and easy to clean, especially in areas where pets are present, while providing comfort and space for the whole family to be together at all times. must be secured. Checking off a list of designers is not an easy task.
I was surprised to learn that this clean, white-and-light-colored home was designed for a family of four with not only style, but also practicality and durability in mind. The stark white walls, textiles, and materials are not what I imagined my family's home would look like. However, interior designers used clever and simple tricks to ensure that all items are long-lasting and easy to maintain, while giving the house a very elegant minimalist feel.
I took a closer look at this contemporary yet timeless apartment in Brooklyn's Prospect Heights to get designer tips for successfully combining form and function.

This condo is part of a modernist glass condo complex designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier. Previously decorated by a designer, it needed a makeover when the family moved in, featuring bold colors and strong patterns. The client wanted a home that had a timeless feel while still maintaining his design aesthetic with modern interiors. The look and feel couldn't be more different and the home feels like new.
With two sons and a dog, we clearly needed more functionality and storage space. This was both rare and necessary for families living in the city. Brooklyn Home His Company's lead architectural designer, Eva Dorn Streich, worked closely with the homeowners to make these wishes a reality.
Every surface of this home has been transformed, from the walls to the floors to the furniture and accessories. The kitchen island was enlarged, the worktop replaced and more utility space incorporated to ensure no nooks served a functional or aesthetic purpose. The result is a light and bright space filled with discreet kitchen storage and practical design that meets the needs of an urban family.

While previous homes featured bold patterns and strong colors, Dornstreich went in the complete opposite direction, using a subdued color palette of white and bright accents, with subtle touches through the use of textures and natural materials. Added contrast. The natural white oak floors have been refinished and stained dark to ground the light-filled spaces, and subtle blues appear throughout the home as an extension of the sky just beyond the glass walls. The light and bright living room, decorated with white walls, features a large, comfortable white linen sofa and a soft, textured cream rug, with a sparkling marble island in the background, as well as discreet, bright white kitchen cabinets. You can see the worktop.
“In addition to having two children and a dog living in this apartment, the homeowner was very keen to keep the interior in pristine condition for years to come, or “There is,” Eva told me. You can see what kind of effect this has in theory. Challenges in terms of practicality. However, she went on to explain: “The refinished floors were given a special treatment to prevent sun damage, and the marble countertops were given an invisible treatment to prevent stains and scratches. Natural, durable materials are used throughout.

Therefore, although it may be easy on the surface, it is by no means easy for family use or daily attacks due to heavy traffic. The designer made sure all areas were covered. “The white sofa is upholstered in high-performance fabric, and many samples have been tested with ketchup and wine. No kidding!” And white paint is always an easy fix. ” I love the minimalism and simplicity look of this apartment. Know that behind its clean surfaces there's true design at work that ensures a look that lasts for years to come, looks great, and most importantly is relaxing and livable. Masu.
