Working from home is no longer a novel concept, but if your home workspace hasn't changed much over the past few years, it may be time to upgrade. Especially after a busy end to 2022 (and hopefully some time to relax over the holidays), you may need some fresh work from home ideas to make your work feel inspiring and exciting again. In the spirit of January refresh, we've collected eight tips from the pros to help you make your work from home space shine in 2023. These work from home ideas should make it a little more fun to sit down and tackle everything on your to-do list this year.
Vary your work location
If you've been working in the same place for literally years, you might need a change of pace. “Find a place with a beautiful view, bright light, and great furniture,” advises Heidi Solomon, a professional organizer at POSH Boston. “Think carefully about what energizes you,” she adds. “Create a space that inspires you, and you and your work will benefit.” Consider moving your desk from your bedroom to your living room or rearranging your furniture to bring a fresh perspective to your workspace.
Utilize sealed storage
Don't let your desk become a repository for clutter. So how do you keep your desktop from becoming overcrowded with supplies? “Use extra closet space or storage space in your cabinets to store unnecessary items that won't clutter your workspace,” suggests Jen Van Buskirk of The Neat Boutique.
Invest in boxes, baskets, label makers, and more to beautifully store your excess supplies. Not only will it make things easier to find, but it'll also have a positive impact on your productivity. “Removing visual clutter from your desk will minimize distractions and create a space where you can focus on work,” says Dana Gilgrist of How Neat by Dana.
Organize your documents like a pro
Yes, you can keep your papers neatly organized without investing in a bulky filing cabinet. Although many documents and projects are handled digitally these days, you'll still want to have printed documents on hand. “Consider keeping a box on a bookshelf near your desk to store your ongoing projects,” advises Gilgrist. “Post the box with the project name on it, and bring the box up to your desk when you're working on the project.” Gilgrist also likes to use a hanging clipboard or letter tray for this purpose.
Enjoy the colors
While many commercial offices are boring and dreary, your work-from-home space doesn't have to be dreary to be productive. “Don't underestimate the importance of plants and inspiring colors to complete your space,” says Van Buskirk. Hit up a plant store and pick up a new green friend to decorate your desk. If you're looking for some color, consider painting an accent wall in a vibrant hue that can double as a chic Zoom backdrop.
Get some stylish items
Remember how much fun it was to go back-to-school shopping as a kid and stock up on gel pens and colorful stationery? Now you can do the same. Pick out office essentials like new pens, personalized notebooks, pretty mouse pads, and more that will get you excited to start your day.
Focus on scent
New year, new work-from-home scents! Get yourself a relaxing and invigorating candle to keep at your desk. Lighting a candle each morning to start your day will become a calming ritual. This is something you can never do in a physical office building, so make sure you enjoy this cozy work-from-home perk.
Fill your drawers with small cheer-up items
One of the benefits of working from home is having everything you need close by. But you might be tired of rushing downstairs to get a granola bar every afternoon at 3pm or searching your apartment for gum after lunch. Why not dedicate one of your desk drawers to store these essentials? Fill it with gum, mints, non-perishable snacks, lip balm, lotion, and any other items you frequently reach for while working. It'll come in really handy on busy days.
Evaluate the lighting situation
Maybe your current desk lamp just doesn't suit you? Or maybe the light coming through your window in the afternoon is too bright and makes it hard to see your computer screen. Remember, proper lighting is key when you're working. If you need to take the time to look online for new lamps or curtains, do so. You'll be thankful when you no longer have to squint at a screen or turn on an overhead light to see your work.
