What is a loft bedroom?
A loft is an open living space located directly under the roof of a home. By definition, a loft bedroom is considered here. However, the term “loft bedroom” often refers to style and design rather than location. In this case, the elements of the room (usually the bed) are higher than the rest of the space.
“A loft bedroom is a bedroom with a raised sleeping area or landing that can be accessed by stairs or a ladder,” says interior designer Andrea Harvey. βIt can also be a raised bed with room for seating or a work area underneath.β
What are the benefits of a loft bedroom?
“This is a great way to make the most of vertical space, especially in smaller homes or attic bedrooms,” says Harvey. “Loft bedroom designs are often used in children's rooms, dormitories, vacation rentals, tiny homes, and small studio apartments.”
Is a loft bedroom a good idea for adults?
absolutely. It's common to see loft bedrooms in children's rooms, but that doesn't mean adults can't join in the fun. A loft bedroom can solve the problem of layout in a small space.
“Loft bedrooms are a great option for getting the most out of your vacation rental, as well as for tiny homes,” says Harvey. βI definitely think a loft space can be a cute and creative option if space is limited.β

studio loft bedroom
This loft bedroom built by @cartography and his wife Sarah was the perfect solution to the space limitations of a 500 square foot studio. This DIY project of his makes the most of vertical space under high ceilings and complements his eclectic style.

double loft bed
@andrea.vd.meer's bed is a fun alternative to bunk beds in this shared children's space. Stairs provide access to both beds, and the space below provides a desk area and storage space for toys.
Children will love the novelty of sleeping on an elevated platform, but the real benefit is the extra floor space created by this type of design.
