With DIY projects and home improvement ideas flooding our social media feeds every day, bringing your dream home to life has never been more affordable or accessible. Like any other aspect of home decor, DIY home decor trends go in and out of fashion but often follow standard interior design trends.
We spoke to four home design and DIY experts to find out what DIY projects will be popular in 2024. Here are six DIY home decor trends that will be big this year.
Textured wall
Heather Barnes, home DIY expert and content creator of @ourbarnesyard on Instagram, predicts that textured walls will be all the rage in 2024. Think Roman clay and limewash paint for a natural stone-like finish.
Both of these wall treatments are eco-friendly and perfect for DIY, requiring only time and patience to achieve the finished look. The best part is that different application techniques can produce completely different results, from plaster to marble-like finishes.
Eccentric Knobs, Pulls, Switch Plates
Here's a super fun and easy way to upgrade your space on a budget: swap out your builder-grade knobs, pulls, and switch plates for something more personalized and unique. Julian Thomas, DIY and home lifestyle expert and partner at Command Brands, says quirky hardware and finishes will be all the rage this year.
“From marble-covered switch plates to anamorphic handles to maximalist switch plates, this DIY design trend is something anyone can do themselves and can add a bold look to any space,” says Thomas.
Wall panels
Wall paneling has been popular in both interior design and home DIY for the past few years, and experts predict this trend will continue into 2024.
“We're starting to see pencil moldings or paneling applied to walls to add more flair,” says Morgan Blinn, principal designer at Rumor Designs, based in Steamboat Springs, Colo. “This simple project can have a big impact on the overall feel of a space and add depth to a wall.”
Although the installation may seem complicated, this is a very easy and beginner-friendly DIY so people of all experience levels can try it.
Disco
From home décor to fashion, the disco movement is making a bit of a comeback, especially with disco balls. Sophie Brown, a graphic designer, content creator, and visual designer at Mustard Made, predicts that “disco-ification” will be a big trend in 2024, with all kinds of home décor pieces getting a sparkly, disco-ball treatment.
“I love to add sparkle and disco,” says Brown, “and capture sunlight and scatter it around the space, creating little universes of unpredictable reflections.”
It's a low-cost, easy trend that combines the best elements of DIY, crafting, and playful home décor.
Bold accent wall
Accent walls aren't new, but experts agree they'll continue to be a trend in 2024. While accent walls have traditionally been neutral and subdued, this year we expect bold, statement DIY accent walls to dominate social media feeds.
“People are becoming more comfortable with bolder styles and are moving away from monochromatic beige tones,” Brin says.
Think striking colors, interesting textures, bold wallpapers, unique architectural details, etc. A bold accent wall not only adds visual interest and personality to a space, but it's also a very affordable and easy way to upgrade your home, regardless of your DIY experience level.
Swag Lighting
Finally, Thomas predicts swag lighting (unwired lighting fixtures) will become popular in 2024 as homeowners look to add lighting throughout their homes without the significant investment of hiring a professional for installation.
For renters, swag lighting fixtures allow them to customize their home without violating their lease or making permanent changes to their space.
“Typically, lighting cords are long and exposed, allowing you to plug them into an electrical outlet,” says Thomas. “The exposed cords of swag lighting can enhance the overall design aesthetic of a space, especially if it's a midcentury or industrial-inspired space.”
