Deciding on the right flooring material is one of the most important interior decorating decisions for any room in your home. Often an expensive investment, your flooring choice should reflect your interior design style while being sturdy enough to withstand the sounds of daily footsteps.

When choosing the best flooring ideas, a good place to start is by looking at the latest flooring trends that reflect both functionality and stylish options. However, it's equally important to be aware of outdated flooring trends to avoid making mistakes in interior design.

We spoke to interior designers to get their thoughts on flooring trends that now feel outdated. I have summarized it below.

5 outdated flooring trends for 2024

Home decor ideas are subjective and you should go with what works for you, but if you're aiming to create an on-trend look, designers should avoid these looks in 2024 I advise you that.

1. Everything is gray

There has been a lot of discussion in recent years about decorating in gray. Some people like this cool neutral, but others feel strongly that it makes the space look drab and uninspiring. According to the designer, the latter is true when it comes to gray flooring ideas.

Neil Bradham, CEO of flooring company Parador, said: “Gray is becoming less popular as people reject clinical and cold tones in favor of a warm and inviting palette.” Point out. “Next year's floors will be dominated by beiges, medium browns, and dark chocolate woods.”

While the use of gray can be applied to all types of flooring, interior designer Elizabeth Sims, founder of CALAFIA Home Design, adds that gray can feel especially dated when used as a natural wood alternative. . She says, “I love gray, but it's not a natural tone” for wood. Wood flooring ideas should feel authentic and retain a natural warmth. ”

2. Wide plank, farmhouse wood

Farmhouse decor ideas will continue to be a core trend in interior design in 2024, but design experts say imitating farmhouse-inspired flooring can feel dated. Wide plank flooring may not be the trendiest style for 2024, explains Robin Gannon of Robin Gannon Interiors, a Massachusetts-based interior designer.

“Wide plank light floors feel like something that's already done with anything farmhouse-related. It's had its moment,” she says, “as a more stylish option when choosing flooring this year. Lists traditional decorating ideas: “Tradition is coming back a little bit, as is the depth of color.” You can never go wrong choosing a warm wood floor that is wide and not something like 8- or 9-inch planks. ”

3. Artificial wood

There are many factors to consider when choosing the best flooring for your home, weighing both aesthetics and practicality. While you should first and foremost choose the best flooring material for your home, designers say engineered wood can look dated and prefer the worn-in look of natural wood instead.

“If you want the look of wood floors, choose the real thing and let it age,” says Elizabeth Sims. “I think Americans are sometimes overly concerned with keeping things new. When you go to Europe, you fall in love with scratched wood and patina marble. It's authentic. They have character and quality. Moreover, I have heard that some of these man-made products cannot withstand floods and other damage. Finally, they are also environmentally wasteful. Masu.”

4. Patterned floor tiles

Whether it's bathroom flooring ideas or kitchen flooring ideas, the solid color tile trend remains a classic look throughout the home, but some designers say patterned floor tiles run the risk of looking dated. states that there is.

“Patterned floor tiles are starting to feel a little dated,” says interior designer Laura Williams, owner and lead designer at ATX Interior Design. But if you like the look of playful, patterned tiles, Laura adds that there are plenty of other spaces to decorate with tiles besides the floor. “I feel like patterned tiles still have a place on walls, stair treads, splashbacks, etc.” in outdoor areas. 5. Low-profile carpets and rugs

In 2024, highly personal and eclectic interior spaces will continue to take the lead, thanks to trends such as dopamine decor. So it's no wonder this sentiment also applies to flooring styles. Designers suggest that while the idea of nondescript, stripped-down carpets and rug styles can look outdated, more experimental options are in vogue for his 2024.

Andy Gard, creative director of flooring company Roger Oates Design, says: “Matching patterns and coordinating furniture has led to more selective combinations of pattern and color in interior design.'' ” he says. “Incorporating playful patterns and contrasting colors can add drama and excitement to your plans.”

Elizabeth Sims adds that layering a rug over your carpet not only creates an on-trend look, but also makes the room feel cozier, especially when it comes to bedroom ideas. There are plenty of her low-pile styles, and you can also stack rugs to define zones and add impact. ”

Designers say these flooring styles are some of the most outdated, but there are many other options that create a more trendy and stylish look. If you're looking for more fresh design ideas, we've rounded up the top interior design trends of 2024 to inspire your next renovation.
