Mumbai: Expansive monochrome
It is the color palette that is imprinted on your subconscious the moment you enter this Mumbai apartment. “[The homeowner]wanted a 'concept,'” says Janhavi Wadhwani of Pink Octopus. “They didn't want every space to look different or unrelated to the rest of the apartment,” adds her partner Tejasee Prabhu. For clients who instinctively understand that they can't cram all the dramatic statements they saw on Pinterest into a small space, the first hurdle seems to have been crossed. Despite the budget-friendly choices, it was clear from the start that the sound design couldn't be sacrificed and everything needed to be cut back. “We knew not to overdo the decorations,” says Prabhu. Even the slightest excess can become overwhelming.

It's very easy to use white in a small space, but the seemingly counterintuitive choice of juxtaposing it with a strip of black adds the sophisticated feel you'd expect. We all understand the instant drama that this starkly contrasting combination creates in a fashion garment, but choosing to use it in a space that will have to live in it for years requires some caution and courage. further consideration is required. Chic, formal, and timeless, this palette is also playful with the careful introduction of small punches of color. Add a little bit of pattern and the mix is complete. – Devyani Jayakar
