11 hallway decorating ideas to make the most of your hallway

Whether you have a small entryway or a long, winding space, you need some eye-catching hallway decor ideas to make your passage feel meaningful. “Hallways add character to spaces that are often neglected or under-decorated,” says Vani Sayeed, founder of Vani Sayeed Studios in Newton, Massachusetts. Hilary Matt, head of Hilary Matt Interiors in New York City, agrees that a drab hallway in a great home can make the overall design feel incomplete. “If you have a home where every room is interestingly decorated and there's just an empty hallway connecting them, it can feel weird and inorganic,” she says. Ready to get started, but need some inspiration first? Below are some amazing hallway decor ideas with trendy and timeless design ideas for minimalists, DIYers, and everyone in between that are sure to add visual interest and style to your space.

What are some modern hallway decorating ideas?

For a contemporary look, ditch recessed lighting when renovating your hallway and instead opt for fixtures with a bit more character. “I love creating a row of pendant lights or playful fixtures,” says Colleen Simonds, founder of Colleen Simonds Design in Pittsburgh. “Repetition is much more visually interesting and is a great opportunity to add color and personality.”

In terms of personality, don't be afraid to go a little outside the box, advises Jamie Ivey of Ivey Design Group in Richmond, Virginia. “This space isn't typically large and doesn't need as much furniture, so making the hallway a little funky can add some fun,” says Ivey. Bryan Yates of Yates Desygn in Dallas agrees: “It's a transitional space, not a destination, so add some personality and be bold.”

If you've been hesitant to try bold decor ideas elsewhere, this is the perfect place to give it a go. Want to incorporate wallpaper into your hallway design? Go for it! “Wallpapering is becoming popular so that it really feels like a separate room,” says Matt.

How can you decorate a hallway on a budget?

If you're looking for chic hallway decor ideas on a budget, there are plenty of ways to incorporate high design for little money. Rebekah Zaveloff of Imparfait Design Studio says the best way to transform your hallway without spending a lot of money is to pick a paint color that inspires you. She recommends going for a dramatic, moody color, especially in the entryway. “You could also paint your front door a glossy black for some shine and color contrast, swap out the overhead light fixture for something bold and unique, and decorate with beautifully framed vintage art,” she adds.

Want to wow your guests with a gallery wall? You can DIY an affordable gallery wall that will be the focal point of your hallway. “If you're on a budget, find books with high-quality art printed on the pages, cut out the pages, and put them in DIY frames to create a striking collection of art prints in your hallway,” suggests Sayeed.

Consider hanging family photos in your hallway, too. They act as timeless decor and showcase loved ones. “Personal photos are a great way to add curb appeal to the walls, even if you're on a budget,” says Matt.

What is the most classic type of hallway decoration?

While wall decor is important, lighting and floor space are also important factors in the perfect hallway decor. “You want your hallway to be well-lit, have sound-absorbing rugs or carpeting on the floor, and look beautiful,” says Sayeed. Simonds agrees. “Probably the most classic hallway decor is a runner rug, lots of framed pictures, and sconces. These are all great decor ideas that can be as classic or modern as you choose.” Ivey also recommends incorporating a console table, which doubles as a great storage solution. “Not only can you hold photos, knick-knacks, books, and lighting, but it's also a great place to hold wall art, mirrors, and sconces,” she says. “It's a versatile piece of furniture that's both functional and beautiful.”
