As the temperatures start to drop and the days get shorter, it’s time to start thinking about winterizing your above ground pool. Properly winterizing your pool helps protect it from potential damage during the colder months, ensuring it’s ready to go when the warmer weather returns. Here are 10 steps to winterize your above ground pool.

Step 1: Clean the Pool
Before you begin the winterization process, make sure your pool is clean. Remove any debris from the pool and skim the surface to get rid of any leaves or other floating objects.

Step 2: Balance the Water
Test the water in your pool and make sure it’s properly balanced. The pH levels should be between 7.2 and 7.6 and the alkalinity between 80 and 120 parts per million. Adjust as needed.

Step 3: Add Winterizing Chemicals
In addition to balancing the water, you’ll want to add winterizing chemicals to the pool. This will help prevent algae growth and keep the water in good condition during the winter months.

Step 4: Lower the Water Level
Lower the water level in the pool to below the skimmer. This will help prevent damage from freezing and expansion during the winter.

Step 5: Clean and Store the Filter
Remove and clean the filter, then store it in a dry place for the winter. This will help prevent damage to the filter and keep it in good working condition for the next pool season.

Step 6: Remove and Store the Pump and Heater
Remove the pump and heater from the pool and store them in a dry place. Make sure to drain any remaining water from the equipment to prevent damage from freezing.

Step 7: Disconnect and Drain Hoses
Disconnect any hoses from the pool equipment and drain them completely. Store them in a dry place to prevent damage from freezing.

Step 8: Cover the Pool
Once the pool is properly prepared, cover it with a durable pool cover. This will help keep debris out of the pool and protect it from the elements during the winter.

Step 9: Secure the Cover
Make sure the pool cover is securely fastened to the pool. This will help prevent it from coming loose and protect the pool from damage.

Step 10: Monitor the Pool
Throughout the winter, periodically check the pool and make sure the cover is secure. Remove any excess water or debris from the cover to prevent damage to the pool.

By following these 10 steps, you can properly winterize your above ground pool and protect it from potential damage during the colder months. This will ensure your pool is in good condition and ready to go when the warmer weather returns.
